Common Loon
The Common Loon a.k.a. Great Northern Diver, that roamed our city’s canals for a number of weeks in December and January (2015 / 2016).
Common Loon (IJsduiker; Eistaucher; Plongeon huard; Gavia immer)
after having stayed in our city it seems to have moved to one of the large reservoirs nearby (Vlietlanden, Leidschendam)
It is the second largest diver worldwide with sizes
L 61 - 100 WS 122 - 152 cm ( 24 - 39 48 - 60 in )
These birds are able to dive as deep as 60 m ( 200 ft. ) and remain submerged for up to 3 minutes.
A typical fish eater, the Hague bird seemed to have developed a special appetite for crayfish (Louisiana crayfish), that seem to be abundant in our city’s canals, as the bird has proven very visibly.
